LED Lights are Shaping the Future in Farming

LED lights and farming

LED lights are well known for their money saving and energy efficient qualities. From lighting homes to lighting electronic equipment, LED lights have many applications. We recently wrote of the way LED lights can be applied on farms to increase milk production in cows. This week we are looking other applications of LED lights like growing vegetables.

Using LED lights to grow pesticide-free vegetables

The key to creating vegetables that are perfect and pesticide-free is consistent lighting and conditions. On a farm in America, a particular combination of red and blue LED lights creates a soft pink light that encourages the plants to photosynthesise. This light creates a perfect environment for plants to grow and drastically cuts down the time to grow a full product from seed.

Why LED lights are ideal for use on your farm or warehouse

The applications of LED lights to grow vegetables are not yet readily available to all farms. It may arguably impact on traditional farming, but it unlikely to impact on farmers for quite a long time.

LED lighting however still have applications on every farm in the UK in a number of ways. The key use is to replace any inefficient lighting in warehouse spaces, barns or livestock housing.

LED lights are ideal for use in farming or warehouse operations for a variety of reasons. The first is to offer a superior quality of light over traditional lighting sources such as halogen light bulbs. As LED lights do not include any delicate filaments like halogen bulbs, LED bulbs are more durable. In farming and warehouses durability is key so LED lights will long for long periods of time.

A long term investment

Farmers are understandably cautious of the the latest technology in farming but LED lighting represents a great, long term investment. A reduction of costs is essential in farming and warehouses. LED lights may seem a large investment at the start but they are cost effective and offer a quick payback.

What type of LED lighting is suitable?

High bay LED lights are ideal for livestock housing or barns, especially round high bay such as our High Bay Light HBL3. This round model will create accurate lighting that will reduce shadows and glare. This particular model will payback on investment in as little as three years.

Bespoke LED lighting options

Depending on the function of the space you are lighting, bespoke options such as dimming or motion sensors. Motion sensors seem a futuristic option to have in farming, but such features are incredibly useful. For storage areas motion sensors will

LED light motion sensors may not be ideal for livestock house, instead dimming options would be better to help make emulate different times of the day.

Whilst the LED light technology used to grow sustainable vegetables is still in early development, you can embrace current LED technology to help reduce energy consumption on your farm.
